Divided into welded and seamless tubes, tantalum tubes have a wide range of applications. Seamless tubes are manufactured using extrusion, tube shrinkage or deep drawing from sheet metal. Welded tubes are manufactured by forming a strip, then forming the tube shape and welding the seam with a gas tungsten arc (GTAW). Tantalum must be extremely clean prior to heat treatment, unlike many other metals. If it is not cleaned very well, surface contamination caused by hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon can occur and become embrittlement (hardening). Because hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon are very active and invasive elements in the temperature range at which tantalum is annealed, once contaminated by these elements, there is no way to get rid of them except by remelting.
